A young woman named Pamela Smith who grew up in a child care home in the United States has made history as the first-ever black Police Chief in the United States.
Pamela Smith served as the Assistant Chief of the Homeland Security Bureau (HSB) in Washington DC until her nomination. She started her career in law enforcement in 1998, serving in various capacities.
She has served as a police officer in New York, San Francisco, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. In 2009, she got promoted to the rank of sergeant and has gone through several ranks before she got promoted to the position of Chief of Police, at the United States Park Police.
Her nomination was made known by a Mayor, Muriel Bowser. The Mayor mentioned that she was nominated as the police chief for dutifully discharging her roles ever since she joined the force.

According to the Washington DC Police Council, Pamela’s appointment will make her the first Black woman to hold the position in the agency’s 230-year history. “This historic moment is not lost on me. I join a legacy of strong African-American women who lead public safety in the District of Columbia,” Pamela said.
“Washington, D.C. is an amazing city. It’s filled with amazing residents, visitors, businesses, and opportunities and I am proud to live as a resident in Ward 8. As a law enforcement officer and a member of this community, I am also troubled by the crime that is plaguing our community. This is why it is important for me, to be engaged in wanting to make the District of Columbia safer. I am passionate about ensuring public safety,” she added.
At a press conference, Pamela outlined her vision for the D.C. Police as its new leader. She stated that she intends to lead from the front and with boots on the ground. “Make no mistake about it, On this day, I am proud, I am humbled and I am excited to work alongside this team,” she said.

Pamela mentioned that she had a difficult upbringing growing up but made sure not to allow it to push her into what the society had already depicted her to be. She said Her mother married when she was 16 and had three children by 21.
She added that her father was a drug addict and mother, an alcoholic who later separated. When her parents divorced, she was very young which made her ended in a Foster care in the United States.
She said she focused on extracurricular activities in high school in order to get out of crime. Her active participation in the school’s sport earned her a three-time all-American in track.
After high school, She went to college and later moved to New York to work as a seasonal park ranger. While on duty, she met a Park Police officer in the horse-mounted unit, who inspired her to join the Metropolitan Police Department.
