A 21-year-old lady named Nia Augustine has bagged a bachelor’s degree with distinctions at the University of Virginia in the United States.
Nia obtained her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at the University of Virginia, United States with High distinctions. She shared her achievement on her Linkedin stating that she is the first in her family to graduate from a four-year Undergraduate Institution.
”I was the FIRST in my family to graduate from a 4-year Undergraduate Institution. I graduated with ‘High Distinction’ from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology,” she said.
She told the Guardian that her family never thought she would go to college. Before she applied, she said her family did not understand the point which put her decision into perspective.

“My mom’s first question was ‘why?’ For some people, it is assumed they will go to college from birth. This wasn’t how it was for me,” she said.
Nia stated that on the day of her graduation, she and her family were relieved and proud adding that they also regretted not making efforts earlier. “I was exhilarated to know that I’ve completed a milestone that many others haven’t,” she said.
While at the University of Virginia, she participated in different extracurricular activities and was a member of notable organizations. She was a Meriwether Lewis Institute Fellow, and the President and Founder of the Wellness Club, Mind&Body.
Nia was also a Success Intern at the Office of the Dean of Students for First Generation College Students, PULSE Moderator, Student Ambassador for the School of Education and Human Development, Honor Community Outreach Committee member, and Student Intern at the Contemplative Sciences Center and Vice President’s Office.
She further shared on her LinkedIn that she will be continuing her education at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health to pursue a Master in Health Administration (MHA) adding that it will make her goal of becoming a Healthcare Executive a reality.
Nia plans to combine her interest in healthcare with her desire to help minority communities by becoming a regional manager at a hospital. She stated that she is passionate about healthcare administration because of the unique opportunity to blend her strengths and commitment to innovation and healthcare.
She expressed her gratitude to her family, mentors, coaches, friends, and professors who have supported and inspired her along the way. Nia said their constant motivation and advice made her reach this point and she is forever grateful for it.
Nia also thanked herself for never giving up even when it seemed impossible. Advising other students who are in the same situation as she is, Nia encouraged them to always seek help whenever they need to.
”As first-generation students, we are used to doing everything by ourselves and we should take pride in our resilience. But seeking help when we need it is essential for our success,”’ she said.
