24-year-old African man wins full-ride scholarship to University of Cambridge, set to earn masters degree

A 24-year-old man named Akingbola Adewunmi has been awarded a full-ride scholarship to pursue his master’s degree at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Akingbola Adewunmi is a Nigerian Doctor who was awarded the King’s College Quantedge and Rowan Williams Scholarship to study for his master’s at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Adewunmi bagged his bachelors degree in Medicine and Surgery (MB;BS ) at the Lagos State University’s College of Medicine. He wrote on his LinkedIn that he transited into the College of Medicine with a 4.95/5.00 grade point average.

While in Medical School, Adewunmi was an active student both on and off his academics. He started a non-profit project, HealthDrive Nigeria, an initiative created to tackle the menace of infectious diseases.

Adewunmi was an Ambassador of the Institute for Economics & Peace, the AfriSAFE Community Hero Award. He won the 25 Under 25 Young African Leaders in Health Award from the iKapture Centre for Development and Opportunity Desk.

He also won the Diana Award, and Ideal Medical Student award from the Lagos State University Medical Students’​ Association (LASUMSA), the Africa COVID-19 Hero Award Africa Youth Awards, and Community Star by Public Health Insight Health Insights.

He said in an interview with Vanguard News that he will be studying for his master’s in Philosophy in Population Health Sciences at the University of Cambridge, the United Kingdom.

Adewunmi said he is fervently dedicated to reshaping the narrative of the Nigerian healthcare system through his advocacy initiatives, conducted under the banner of HealthDrive Nigeria. He employed thoroughly devised strategies to fight infectious diseases, with a specific focus on combating Viral Hepatitis B.

Speaking about his expectations at Cambridge, he said he expects to be trained through world-class methods and strategies on how to enhance the health of populations with more emphasis on the Nigerian context.

“I believe there is a lot more work to be done to ensure that the diverse kind of populations, we have in Nigeria and in West Africa generally can benefit from personalized public health strategies with respect to their demographic status and income earnings and all that,” Adewunmi said.

“I believe that this course at Cambridge University will grant me sufficient skills and knowledge to be able to improve the quality of populations in West Africa,” he added.

Adewunmi said he feels elated and grateful for the unique opportunity stating that he sees it as a once-in-a-lifetime chance, especially given his background. He said attending the prestigious Cambridge University with a full scholarship is a privilege he would never take for granted.

Encouraging Nigerian students, Adewunmi advised them to prioritize academics alongside their extracurricular pursuits, emphasizing the importance of engaging in activities that align with their career goals, particularly those involving social impact and image-building.
