49-year-old Nigerian footballer, Benedict Akwuegbu returns to school 10 years after retirement, bags bachelors degree at UK university

49-year-old Nigerian footballer, Benedict Akwuegbu who returned to school 10 years after he retired has finally graduated from Anglia Ruskin University, London in the United Kingdom.

Benedict Akwuegbu a retired Nigerian football striker popularly known as the 30-cap Super Eagles and AK Grazer of Austria with 21 years of illustrious professional football career.

In 2020, he decided to return to the university to equip himself with the prerequisite academic knowledge to manage a sports business. He enrolled in Anglia Ruskin University London to study for a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management.

Upon his resumption, the London university extended their congratulatory message to the football star. “Dear Benedict Akwuegbu, on behalf of everybody here at ARU London, I would like to say congratulations for securing your place here at ARU London…,” the school wrote.

Throughout his career, Benedict scored 10 career goals in UEFA competitions while playing for several clubs in Europe and has served a mandatory one year in the Austrian Army despite his activeness in the football game.

Yes, that’s quite true. You know in life, there is no age limit to education. It doesn’t count age, so we keep on learning. Though I’ve retired from playing active football, I believe I still have more to offer the game so I have to equip myself for the task,” he said.

Benedict stated that he decided to go back to school to prepare for a career in sports management. He said he has been involved in sports his whole life and wants to stay in the industry after he stops playing.

He added that he realized that he needed the education to work in sports management so that was why he enrolled for the necessary qualifications. Benedict’s hard work and determination paid off as he bagged the degree in 2024.

Benedict also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Plateau State Governor, Nigeria recently. Additionally, four top universities are seeking to offer admission to him  for a Master’s degree program in Mental Health Nursing.
