2024 IEG Fellowship in Germany | Fully Funded

The Leibniz Institute of European History awards fully funded IEG fellowships for a period of six to twelve months for international doctoral students interested in studying in Germany.

The fellowship offers a stipend of € 16,200 in a 12-month period, and a further € 5,400 as family allowance to support the dependants of the selected fellows while they are studying in Germany.

IEG Fellowship Summary

IEG Fellowship Details:

The IEG fellowship supports international doctoral students who wish to carry out their research projects using Digital Humanities methods.

The research should be connected to the institute’s research programme on Negotiating differences in Europe as well as the collaborative digital projects (e.g. DigiKAR or Shared Churches).

The Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz, Germany, is a non-profit institution devoted to academic research.

The institute is an independent, public research institute that carries out and promotes historical research on the foundations of Europe in the early and late Modern period.

At IEG, you will have the chance to closely collaborate with the researchers in the Digital Historical Research Unit (DH Lab). Scholars from the humanities with a historical focus who use digital methods for their projects are also invited to apply for the fellowship.

Benefits of IEG Fellowships in Germany

  • The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) awards one fellowship for a period of six to eight months for international doctoral students in the field of Digital Humanities.
  • IEG Fellowships for postdocs have a monthly value of € 1,350.

  • Fellowship holders whose partners accompany them to Mainz and do not have an income of more than 450 euros per month may receive a family allowance. Please indicate in your application whether your partner accompanies you to Mainz. 
  • Fellows who come to Mainz accompanied by their underage children can apply for child allowance.

To apply, candidates must be ready to submit the following documents;

  • letter of motivation (PDF)
  • curriculum vitae; a list of publications, if available (PDF)
  • a brief description of your proposed research project including the digital methods (max. 5 pages, PDF)
  • copies of university certificates and proof of language competence (PDF)
  • academic letter of reference (PDF)
