Nigerian-American economics and Finance scholar Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Letters by the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is Nigerian economist and international development expert who serves as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), making her the first woman and the first African to hold this position.
She was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, an achievement she shared on her Twitter with pictures from the ceremony.
”A great honor to be recognised today by Oxford University with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (D.litt. honoris causa). A marvellous ceremony at the Sheldonian Theatre followed by receptions at All Souls and St Johns Colleges,” she wrote.

She mentioned that the ceremony was graced by the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, and other 5 Honorands together with her husband and her daughter. In 2022, she was named by Forbes as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world.
According to the Forbes record, she has over 30 years of experience as an economist and international development professional, working in Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and North America.
Dr Okonjo-Iweala also holds a doctorate of Humane Letters from Georgetown
University, an honorary doctorate from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and another from Luiss University in Rome, Italy.
Before joining the World Trade Organisation, she held various leadership roles at organizations such as the World Bank and the Nigerian government. She is widely respected for her advocacy on issues related to economic development, trade, and gender equality.
Dr. Okonjo Iweala is a leading voice in advocating for fair trade policies that benefit developing nations and has worked to address challenges such as trade barriers, tariff negotiations, and access to crucial resources.
