Josaine said she stayed up all night for months writing multiple college essays, personalizing her CV for each company, and preparing for interviews. She stated that unlike her college mates at Brampton Manor who applied to college through Oxbridge, she did not.
She decided to apply another way because it was not her dream and to save herself from the stress and heartbreak. Josaine said instead she directly applied to some universities across the United States and the United Kingdom.
”For me that was applying to Oxbridge. I know most people have this image of if you go to Brampton Manor, dreaming of and applying to Oxbridge is a right of passage but for me, that was never the dream,” she said.
Josaine applied to Imperial College, Nottingham University, Manchester University, Bath University, and University College London all in the United Kingdom to study for a degree in chemical engineering, Mechanical or Bachelor of Engineering.
She also applied to 10 universities in the United States for different degrees through the United States Sutton Trust and 5 Tech degree apprenticeships. Josiane said that even though she was rejected, she does not regret her actions but rather she faced the positive accomplishments.
Highlighting the achievement, Josaine said she was offered admission by 4 of the 5 universities in the UK, was awarded a full tuition black heritage scholarship from Imperial College, and received offers from 2 out of the 5Â tech degree apprenticeships.
She received offers from International Business Machines Corporation and Goldman Sachs, with both having less than 5% acceptance rate. She also secured interviews with top colleges including Stanford and Rice University and interned at a leading FinTech company.
Josaine said even though she is facing her achievement, her greatest regret was being rejected from all 10 universities in the United States, despite all the hard work, time, and money she put into it.
She stated that despite, the disappointment, her trust in God did not falter. Josaine said she finally decided to start a Software Engineer Apprenticeship at Goldman Sachs whilst studying for a bachelors degree in Digital and Technology Solutions course at Queen Mary University, London with her A-level distinction grades.
She expressed her gratitude to her family, friends, and teachers who supported her and believed in her potential when she doubted, especially her mother, who created interview documents for her, did mock practices with her and made sure to celebrate her wins.
Advising other applicants, Josaine said they should have people they can lean on and who will always be in their corner as it makes life a little bit easier.
