Brilliant African girl wins UK Rhodes scholarship twice, set to earn Masters degree at University of Oxford free of charge

An exceptional African Lady who hails from The Gambia, Isatu Bokum has emerged as the first-ever Gambian to win the United Kingdom Rhodes Scholarship twice.

Isatu Bokum completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism at the University of The Gambia. She thereafter won the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship which granted her the opportunity to earn an honours degree at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Isatu Bokum progressed with her studies and went on to the prestigious United Kingdom’s Rhodes Trust Scholarship which will see her earn a Master’s degree in Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Oxford.

The Rhodes Trust Scholarship at the Univesity of Oxford grants successful candidates a full tuition waiver plus a living stipend of £17,310 per annum to earn their Master’s degree. Application for the 2022 Award opened in May 2022 and applicants have submitted their applications.

Isatu Bokum’s second scholarship award made her the first-ever Gambian to win two Rhodes Scholarship Awards. She shared her excitement on LinkedIn expressing her joy to have gotten the opportunity to attend the prestigious University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

In another story, a 25-year-old woman from the United States, Haben Girma has emerged the first-ever blind and deaf person to graduate from Harvard Law School, Cambridge.

Haben Girma who is now a global icon for achieving her exceptional feat graduated with a Juris Doctor degree (J.D) from the Harvard Law School despite being both blind and deaf in 2013.

Girma lost her vision and hearing as a result of an unknown progressive condition beginning in early childhood, retaining just 1% of her sight. During her early life in the United States, she benefited from civil rights laws including the Americans with Disabilities Act.
