Nigerian striker, Asisat Oshoala has set the outstanding record of becoming the first-ever African woman to be nominated for the Women’s Ballon d’Or player of the year award.
Asisat Oshoala had an incredible run as one of the best women football players in the world. Before her nomination for the 2022 Women’s Ballon d’Or player of the year award, she became the best ever African women football player after winning the CAF player of the year award a record 5 times.
Asisat who also plays for Barcelona Femeni beats Ajara Nchout Njoya (Cameroon and Inter Milan) and Zambia international Grace Chanda (Zambia and BIIK Kazygurt) to clinch the prestigious award for the 5th time.
She however joined the list of 20 best female footballers in the world, making her the first-ever African woman to join the list.

The other nominees for the 2022 Women’s Ballon d’Or player of the year award include; Selma Bacha, Fridolina Rolfo, Vivianne Miedema, Lucy Bronze, Sam Kerr, Christiane Endler, Lena Oberdorf, Kadidiatou Diani, Catarina Macario, Alexia Putellas, Alexandra Popp, Aitana Bonmatí, Wendie Renard, Alex Morgan, Beth Mead, Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Millie Bright, Trinity Rodman and Ada Hegerberg.
Reacting to her nomination, Asisat sent out a tweet saying “NAIJA” indicating that she is proud to represent her country on the world stage. She stands a chance of becoming the best women’s player in the world and should be voted as the winner on the 17th of October, 2022 when the winner will be announced.
In a similar record-setting moment for Nigerians, Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s top racer broke the women’s 100m hurdles world record at the World Athletics Championships 2022 which was held in Oregon, United States.
She beats American Keni Harrison‘s world record of 12.20s after finishing the 100m hurdle race in 12.12 seconds during the semi-finals and went ahead to set a new outstanding record in Finals which she finished in just 12.06 seconds, making her the best in the world.
