A lecturer at the university stated that Deanna studied for all of the degrees at the same time because she had limited time. While at the university, she founded the Compton Pipeline Taskforce, a volunteer group that mentors students in Compton schools and helps them prepare for college.
Deanna mentioned that she juggled her studies, parenting, and her activism, often sacrificing sleep and comfort. She said she relied on scholarships, grants, and loans to pay for her tuition and expenses.
“I saw the difference in how my boys were in school in Brentwood and then how schools were in Compton where I came from,” she said. Deanna stated that her sons were her main motivation for earning the scholarship.
Deanna said she wants to use her education and skills to make a difference in her community adding that she plans to go to law school and become a district attorney. She said she hopes to encourage other single mothers and young women of color to follow their dreams.
