26-year-old Lady graduates US university as an Eye Doctor, joins the 2% of black women optometrists in the US

An exceptional Lady named Kyra Mcmillian has graduated from the Western University of Health Sciences, California in the United States with a degree in Optometry (Eye Specialist).

Kyra, a North Carolina native graduated as an Optometrist (Eye Doctor)from the College of Optometry, Western University of Health Sciences, California in the United States. She earned the degree while also being a member of the United States Armed Forces.

Kyra shared her achievement on Instagram, stating that her accomplishment will place her among the 2% of black women who are Eye Doctors in the United States, and the 1% of black women who are officers in the United States Armed Forces, all at the age of just 26.

”At 26, I have joined the 2% of black women optometrists in the US and the 1% of black women officers in the US Air Force. Chances of finding another me?” she said

She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2019 at the University of North Carolina Charlotte before she proceeded to Western University for a four-year academic run in Optometry.

Kyra was the first in her family to ever graduate from the university. She stated that the younger version of herself may have considered this achievement a display of power or success, but in reality, it is not.

She said it feels overwhelming to rely on only a few people like her to take care of the health of all black people.

Kyra mentioned that growing up, she never had the opportunity to see an eye doctor who looked like her which was the reason why she decided to pursue a career in optometry.

She said she put in a lot of effort and dedication to achieve this goal adding that despite the challenges, she is enthusiastic about working together to improve health outcomes for minorities and create positive change.

She said her long-term goal as an optometrist is to serve diverse populations, specifically in underserved communities. Kyra added that her goal is to be a part of a culturally competent team that strives to improve the quality of life for all patients.

Kyra said in addition to improving health outcomes,  she also aims to educate communities on the ocular manifestations of systemic diseases and the importance of routine eye exams.
