A young African Lady named Awa Gai bagged a bachelor’s degree at the age of 21, and a master’s degree at 23 and became the first lawyer in her family.
Awa obtained her Bachelor of Law at the University of Gambia, Serrekunda, Gambia after which she proceeded to the University of Pretoria to earn a Master of Law at the age of 23.
After she bagged her bachelor’s degree, Awa was called to bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of The Gambia at the age of 22. She earned her master’s of Law in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa.
She mentioned that her commitment to women’s rights and gender justice began at a young age, adding that her journey as a women’s rights advocate started during her time as Head Girl at her high school.

Awa said she was recognized for her remarkable achievements, and she received the Most Outstanding Diploma of Arts Student Award during her graduation ceremony.
During her master’s program, Awa’s research focused on advancing access to justice for women in The Gambia using transitional justice mechanisms. Her research earned her the 3rd Place Recipient title in the Dean’s Essay Competition at the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria.
She dedicated the degree to her late mother noting that she taught her how to be determined to achieve her goals. Awa is not only the first lawyer in her family, but she is also the first person to ever graduate from the university.
Because of her commitment to women and human rights, Awa founded ‘She Awards Gambia’, which is an impactful celebration of women’s achievements.
She said with her vision and determination she has transformed the initiative into a platform that inspires a generation of women and girls to be anything they want to become while striving for excellence.
Awa said as a human rights lawyer, she continues to champion justice and equality, advocating for marginalized communities and empowering women to exercise their rights. She added that her expertise and knowledge in human rights issues, particularly in enhancing access to justice for women, have positioned her as a leading voice in the field.
