Brilliant Nigerian man first-class Chemical Engineering degree, earns undergraduate award at US university

A brilliant Nigerian man named Chidubem Akpu who bagged a Chemical Engineering degree with first class has been awarded an undergraduate award at Stanford University in the United States.

Chidubem obtained a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria with a first-class grade of 4.81 over a 5.00 cumulative grade point average.

He took to his LinkedIn to share his achievement of winning the 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at Stanford University, in the United States. Chidubem said he was one of the 3% selected for the 1030 students around the world.

”I am excited to have been selected as part of the 3% (31/1030+) students around the globe to participate in the 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at Stanford University, CA. This still feels to me like a dream,” he said.

Chidubem said being the first graduate in her family, even though he had nurtured the thought of himself at Stanford University, he never imagined it coming soon. He said for seven weeks, he worked with a professor to contribute to the research of decarbonizing steelmaking.

He said he used cutting-edge tools at Stanford University School of Engineering and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to conduct his experiments and perform my analyses.

He added that he was also able to get a glimpse of what it means to be a graduate student, especially in a highly ranked R1 university like Stanford University, which helped him prepare for the program.

Chidubem said he is grateful for the support of his industry mentor, Engineer Boye who has been invaluable to his career growth.

He expressed his gratitude to those who helped review and write his essay, his professors who wrote excellent recommendations on his behalf, and the lecturers who prepared him for this opportunity.

Chidubem said aside from the research, he was also introduced to the industry through his cohort’s visit to Genentech and Autodesk, making him see the impacts of our research on the innovations in the industry.
