Tayo had always wanted to be a scientist according to his university’s website. He was captivated by “The Magic School Bus,” an animated series featuring a fictional elementary school class that took field trips on an anthropomorphic bus to impossible places like the solar system, the human body, and the past.

He said plans to make renewable energy more affordable for the average person, a goal he will make possible as a Rhodes Scholar. Tayo said he will research solar cells at Oxford University as part of his doctorate studies.

Tayo mentioned that his achievement is a prove that anyone can succeed with the right support system in place being the first in his family to ever graduate and win a scholarship.

“I think it’s a testament to my institution and the fact that there are great people everywhere. I’ve worked hard, but there were people here supporting me,” he said.

While a student, Tayo became a published researcher in nanotechnology, a young field that draws from multiple disciplines such as chemistry and physics to manipulate individual atoms and molecules.

“It is truly another world when you get to the nanoscale. Nanoscience is the biggest expanse to explore,” he said. He also won a Goldwater Scholarship and has conducted research in the nanomaterials laboratory at the University of Strasbourg in France.

He is a triathlete and was co-captain of the University of Wiscosin-Eau Claire triathlon team. He not only participated in the Honors Program, he co-taught a section of Honors 100, the seminar for first-year students in the program.

Tayo hopes to someday emulate his experience with his profess, and perhaps return to the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire as a professor. He said if he had picked a major other than science,  it would have been education.
