Australia Tightens Student Visa Rules for International Students | Full Details

The Australian Government has announced that the country will come up with stricter migration rules for foreign students starting from Saturday, March 23rd, 2024.

From Saturday, English language requirements for student and graduate visas will be increased, while the government will get the power to suspend education providers from recruiting international students if they repeatedly break rules.

The announcement which made on Thursday, March 21st, 2024 was in response to the sharp rise in the country’s population which has caused a strain on the already-tight rental market.

Australia Tightens Student Visa Rules - A Deep Look

Australia boosted its annual migration numbers in 2022 to help businesses recruit staff to fill shortages after the COVID-19 pandemic brought strict border controls, and kept foreign students and workers out for nearly two years.

The country has however announced that it shall begin enforcing tougher visa rules for foreign students this week as official data showed migration hit another record high, which is likely to further exacerbate an already tight rental market.

Overall, Australia’s population was found to have risen by 2.5% – the fastest pace on record – to 26.8 million people in the year to last September.

What the Australian New Visa Rule Means for Nigerians

The record migration and consequent population increase was driven primarily by students from India, China and Philippines. This has expanded labour supply and restrained wage pressures, but it exacerbated an already tight housing market

Nigerians currently do not require English proficiency tests (IELTS or TOEFL) to study in Australia as international students.

This is because Australian universities do not require students whose undergraduate medium of instruction was English to submit these documents.

However, the new genuine student test will apply as well to Nigerians as the country looks to reduce the number of migrants.

We hereby encourage prospective students to begin preparing for standardized English proficiency tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge ETS.
