Alice said she is excited to have achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first lawyer in their family. She said seeing a picture of her younger self in a Lawyer’s wig made her realize she had fulfilled a childhood dream and made her younger self proud.
She said she was surprised by the positive reactions from others to her achievement, as she usually downplays her successes. Alice said the most rewarding part was discovering how her story inspired others to pursue their own dreams.
She said that she did not grow up with any lawyers in her family or circle of friends and stumbled across the profession by herself. Washington said it was during a career fair filled with different professionals in her primary school, that she dressed as a Lawyer which inspired her to pursue the dream.
“When I was younger I didn’t fully understand the law, but the general idea of becoming a lawyer was always something that I had an interest in. I think the idea originally came from watching a lot of legal dramas on television,” Alice said.
“They allowed me to wear the wig and then one of my teachers took a picture of me and gave it to my mum. My mum pinned it up in her office and I’ve spent every day since then working towards seeing that picture become reality,” she added.
Alice said she spent her teenage years studying hard and researching the qualifications she would need to become a lawyer. She stated that her teachers were always supportive of her dream and encouraged her to chase it.
She credited her success to her mother for supporting her dream. Alice recalled applying for a scholarship after her bachelor’s degree but was rejected and her mother took up the fee and sponsored her master’s degree.
“I owe my mum everything. She supported me spiritually, emotionally, and financially. She believed that I was capable of becoming a lawyer and didn’t want finances to be the thing that stopped me from achieving my dream,” she said.
She mentioned that she was told no at so many stages of the journey. Alice added that she was also rejected, discouraged, and overlooked, but God came through for her and kept her motivated and grounded.
Alice said she is excited for her future legal career and beyond emphasizing the hard work she put into achieving her dream.
