Young African man who worked as a cleaner to sponsor his education finally graduates, fulfills lifelong dream

A determined young African man named Francis Uddo has fulfilled his lifelong dream of graduating from Ashesi University after bagging a Business Administration degree at the university.

Francis Uddo bagged his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Ashesi University, Ghana. He told the university’s website that attending the university has always been a lifelong dream.

Francis said he worked as a cleaner at Ashesi University, Ghana while still in Junior High School with the hopes of attending the university someday. He made the decision to leave his cleaning job and pursue his education as a Senior High School student.

Francis was determined to turn his dream into reality. He seized the opportunity while working as a cleaner at the university, using this chance to engage in conversations with students and staff.

Through the interactions, Francis gathered valuable understandings about the university and figured out how he could secure admission. In 2019, he enrolled at the university, a period he describes as the best time of his life.

While at the university, Francis actively participated in extracurricular activities. He was an active member of the Ashesi Community. He was also a representative of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars and represented the institution at various summits and conferences across Africa.

”Before I came to Ashesi, I was fully aware of the abundant opportunities available to me as a student. With that in mind, I created a list of goals I wanted to achieve, and today, I can proudly say that I have ticked all the boxes,” he said.

Francis also served in the Judicial Executive Council and volunteered as a buddy for first-year students, providing support and guidance as they transitioned into university life.

His commitment led him to become a Resident Assistant for Walter Sisulu Hall, where he contributed to fostering a vibrant community. Francis was also elected President of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars which further amplified his impact.
