An exceptional woman named India Jackson has set an outstanding record at Georgia State University, United States after emerging as the first-ever black person to earn a PhD in Astrophysics from the institution.
India Jackson, an African-American, made history as the first-ever Doctor of Astrophysics from Georgia State University, United States. She took to Twitter to share her excitement of making the history highlighting all of her educational milestones.
“It is my honor to announce that I have made history as the first black woman to receive a PhD in Physics from Georgia State University. During this journey I attained: BS MATH, MS MATH, MS PHYSICS, MS Computer Science, PhD Astrophysics,” she wrote.
India obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics after which she proceeded to earn her three master’s degrees, one in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science before bagging her doctorate in Astrophysics.

Being a Heliophysicist, Mathematician, and Computer Scientist, India has also made significant strides in her professional career. She interned at some of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) centers.
The centers include the Johnson Space Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. While interning at NASA, she studied solar energetic particles, coronal mass ejections, and its effects on astronauts according to Black in Astro.
India stated that she is self-taught in 10 computer programming languages and has aspirations to complete a solar simulator for my dissertation. She mentioned that she has not yet found a company that believes in her vision which is why she is unable to secure external funding for her concept.
However, she strongly believes in her ideas and vision. This belief motivated her to embark on a project to finance her life after graduation.
India singlehandedly created a one-stop-shop mobile application complete with a provisional patent for automated user-uploaded software named Let’s Get Physical, LLC.
She said the mobile application is the foundation of what will be a technology-driven conglomerate based in metro Atlanta. India said the app debuts with a retro-style 2D side scroller game named after her grandmother, Bethenia’s Come Up.
In addition to her academic and professional accomplishments, India is also an advocate for diversity in Science Technology Engineering, and Mathematics. She actively mentors young women and minorities, encouraging them to pursue careers in science and technology.
