12-year-old exceptional boy outshines contestants to win spelling bee competition in the US, gets $50,000 scholarship award

An exceptional 12-year-old boy named Bruhat Soma has beaten contestants across the United States to emerge the winner of a spelling bee. His outstanding performance earned his 50000 dollars worth of scholarship awards.

Bruhat, a seventh-grade student from St. Petersburg, Florida emerged as the winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. He spelled 29 words correctly in the tiebreaker, beating his opponent by eight, to win the title.

He was awarded a trophy and more than $50,000 in cash and prizes for his victory.  The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an annual spelling bee held in Washington, the United States.

Bruhat had won three consecutive spelling bees before he arrived at the most prestigious spelling competition in the English language in the United States.

“I never expected this,” he told the Washington Post. Bruhat said that there was only one word he did not recognize but luckily it was not his turn.

“I always want to win. And this was, like, my main goal. It didn’t matter if I won all those other bees. This is what I was aiming for. So I’m just really happy that I won this.,” Bruhat said.

The spelling bee began with eight finalists, and after the commercial break, the officials announced it was time for a “spell-off” and they were given a chance to spell against each other in a conventional round.

Bruhat went first, and after he got through 30 words, it appeared he would be impossible to beat. The second opponent spelled 25 words correctly missing out on four.

Bruhat’s 30 words were: brouette, adelantado, hyporcheme, bisellium, mycteric, endecha, sericin, nyctalopia, ascham, wenzel, cebell, heautophany, kwazoku, panetiere, sagaie, nachschlage, exorhason, porphyrio, giclee, ashwagandha, puszta.

Other words are, asarotum, scintillante, myrabalanus, sciniph, voussoir, caizinha, ramoneur, aposiopesis and abseil. Bruhat’s only error came on porphyrio, which he spelled P-O-R-P-H-E-R-I-O.

Bruhat was showered with confetti and handed the trophy, with 50,000 dollars cash prize to take home.
