An exceptional Nigerian Lady named Colette Offiong Bassey has broken a 44-year-old record of the University of Calabar, Nigeria after emerging the first-ever first-class graduate of its Department of Linguistics and Communications Studies.
Colette who was heavily pregnant while taking her final year examination narrated that she sat for an examination on Wednesday and gave birth to a baby boy the next Saturday.
A statement by the university confirmed that she is the first person in the history of the institution to earn a first-class degree from the Linguistics and Communications studies department. The statement reads: “Bassey Colette Offiong emerged as the only first-class student from Linguistics and Nigerian Languages in the 2018/2019 session”
“and the first ever in the history of the department dated back to 1977,” it added.

Celebrating her achievement, Colette expressed thanks to God and her husband who pushed her hard and gave her great support.
“To God be the glory. I remember finishing exams on a certain Wednesday and giving birth that Saturday. It was one hell of a ride but it ended in praise,” she wrote on Instagram.
“After God, my gratitude goes to my husband who Pushed me hard and gave me great support. I have a great support system, the rest of family included,” she added.
She advised upcoming scholars to focus on achieving success as it is never too late to aspire. “It’s never too late to achieve excellence, you just have to start. Take the step, whatever it is,” she said.
“The journey to greatness goes on,” she opined.
