A 19-year-old African American girl named Coco Gauf has made history as the youngest woman to with the US Tennis Open.
Coco Gauf is an American professional Teniss who made her first debut in 2017 and ever since then she has been making history in the tennis world. She defeated the Greek World No.9 Maria Sakkari 6-2, 6-3 in the women’s final to win the DC Open making her the youngest American woman to do so ever since Serena Williams did in 2001.
The win is her fourth singles title and her first at a WTA-500 event. Also, it is her first career singles title in the United States according to BOTWC. Coco also made history as the youngest women’s champion in tournament history.
“It means a lot to me really. Any American tournament I think is special, but I feel like even more here. I have played Cincinnati and I have played other tournaments in the U.S., even last year in San Jose when this was in San Jose, but I think that there is just something about D.C,” she said.

In 2021, Coco also broke a 15-year record to become the youngest woman to reach a grand slam quarterfinal at the 2021 French Open.
She was also the youngest American woman to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Venus Williams did it at the age of 17 at the 1997 U.S. Open. Coco also won her maiden WTA Tour singles championship at the 2019 Linz Open at the age of 15, becoming the Tour’s youngest singles champion since 2004.
Speaking in an interview, Coco said she admires Serena Williams so much and does not see her as a competitor. She added that she would have loved to play with her but unfortunately, she retired. “Serena is Serena, She’s the GOAT. I’d hope to do half of what she did. But I’m not gonna compare myself to her,” Coco said.

“She’s my idol. The only regret I’ll have for the rest of my life is not being able to play her. There were so many tournaments where if we won an extra round and didn’t lose, I would’ve played her. But I’m still happy to just be a product of her legacy and be out here for American tennis,” she added.
According to Forbes, Coco Gauf became the seventh highest-paid female athlete in the world in 2022.
