Historically black colleges and universities are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African-American community
Previously, four scholarships were awarded, one per college, to female incoming, current or graduate students pursuing studies in creative arts, music, literature or African-American studies.

Currently, this Beyonce Scholarship expanded to eight schools in its second year with the help of a Google.org partnership.
According to Maab Ibrahim, a Google.org program manager;
Google understands the vital role historically black colleges and universities play in delivering high quality and culturally responsive education.
