Each year, the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) awards multiple scholarships to students who demonstrate dedication to the pursuit of higher education in various areas of study, including history, economics, law, political science, medicine, nursing, therapy Occupational and physical, Primary and secondary education, chemistry, mathematics, science and English.

 

DAR is pleased to announce that from August 1, 2019, through February 15, 2020, all students applying for DAR scholarships 2020 offered by the DAR Scholarship Committee will submit their applications through an online application process. Applications sent by email or by mail will no longer be accepted.

 

About DAR

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who descend directly from a person involved in the United States‘ efforts toward independence.

A non-profit group promotes historical preservation, education, and patriotism. The membership of the organization is limited to the direct linear descendants of soldiers or others of the revolutionary period who helped the cause of independence; applicants must have reached 18 years of age and are reviewed at the chapter level for admission.

Scholarship Benefits

The selected candidate will receive up to $2,500 scholarship awarded for up to four years to attend a four-year accredited undergraduate and graduate school. Each scholarship is intended to cover a significant portion of the student’s education costs, including tuition, living expenses, books, and fees.

The scholarship application portal should not be used when applying for scholarships for American Indians or the DAR Award to good citizens and scholarship contests. These scholarship applications must be sent to different addresses for processing.

Application Deadline

Applicants must submit their scholarship applications for the 2020 academic year using the new DAR online process from August 1, 2019, through February 15, 2020, at 12 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).

Do you have to be a member of DAR or be related to someone in the organization to receive a DAR scholarship?

There are only two scholarships that require applicants to be the daughter or son of a DAR member. Those scholarships are the Lillian & Arthur Dunn Scholarship and the Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship.

Do scholarship applicants need a DAR Chapter to sponsor their applications?

Sponsorship of the scholarship applicants chapter is no longer required, however, applicants may want to contact a DAR chapter in their area to get help with their applications.

What types of students are eligible for scholarships offered through the DAR Scholarship Committee?

Applicants should carefully review the eligibility criteria for each scholarship to determine if they are eligible to apply.

For example, some scholarships are available for all types of students, such as high school students or those currently enrolled in a college or university.

While other scholarships have specific eligibility criteria that require specific documentation, such as current enrollment in a nursing program, a child of a DAR member or a student pursuing a certain field of study.

 

How does an applicant apply for the DAR Scholarship Committee grant through the new online submission process?

Applicants will use the online submission process of the DAR Scholarship Committee found on the DAR public site to submit their scholarship application.

Once applicants have set up their scholarship profile, they can complete their scholarship application online.

If necessary, applicants may provide access to individuals who wish to submit confidential letters of recommendation or school transcripts.

Should the transcript submitted with the application be an official transcript?

Applicants may submit an unofficial transcript at the time of the request.

If selected as a beneficiary of a scholarship, an official transcript must be submitted before the scholarship payment is processed.

If an official transcript is not received on the requested date, the scholarship will be lost and awarded to the next qualified recipient.

What happens if applicants do not have access to a computer to send their applications or to a scanner to load the required scholarship application documents, such as birth certificates or transcripts?

Encourage applicants to seek help from their high school guidance counselors, guidance office, school administration or ask them to visit their local public library to access community computers.

DAR members or the chapter can also contact local schools to offer assistance to students applying for DAR scholarships.

If applicants have questions about a specific scholarship, who should they ask?

Applicants should contact the National Vice President responsible for each scholarship. Their email addresses are listed on the Scholarship page on the public DAR site where all scholarships are listed.

When is the scholarship payment sent to the applicant’s school/university?

All scholarship payments will be mailed during the first week of August. All requested information must be sent before the deadline provided when the recipient is notified that the recipient of the scholarship is.

Are the requirements for GPAs on a weighted rating scale or not?

Depending on the rating system used by the institution, it must be equivalent to a 4.0 in its rating system. Institutions that use a “Pass / Fail” rating system must be able to provide some type of written documentation from the school (if requested by the DAR) to prove their rating system.

Only applicants selected as recipients of each scholarship will be notified by email no later than the second week of May.
